Swiftboating John McCain

2008 April 23

In 2004, a group called the Swift Vets and POWs for Truth ran a series of ads that called in question John Kerry’s war record and his purple heart medal.

Many people called the ads classless and low. Despite this, many cite these ads as effective and one of the reasons why Kerry failed to capture the presidency.

So controversial were these ads, that pundits coined the term ’swiftboating’. Many Democrats use the phrase and some Republicans use it as well (one of the ones that don’t is Sean Hannity). Now, with the 2008 election this close, I have noticed some people supporting Obama, and maybe Hillary, are starting to use similar tactics on John McCain.

Some of the things they are saying is along the lines of him divulging important information to the enemy. They also say that he worked with the enemy. Well, the man was a POW, a prisoner of war! He was tortured! Heck, despite McCain’s support of the war, he is the most prominent figure against torture. Any swiftboating done by Democrats is a shame and hypocritical. Interestingly enough, the person that swiftboated John McCain in the past was one named George W. Bush. Look up the 2000 Republican Primaries in Wikipedia.
