Appeasement & George W. Bush’s Words

2008 May 15

Today, President Bush spoke to the Knesset on the 60th Anniversary of the independence of Israel. In it, he decided to take a jab at those who want to have diplomatic talks with Iran by comparing them to Nazi appeasers. Many take it as a jab for Obama who has said that he wants to have talks with Iran in order to resolve the problem.

You can take this as a jab for Obama or Jimmy Carter. You can take it as a jab for Colin Powell or Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. All these individuals have echoed similar hopes and/or plans to talk with Iran. In short, no matter whom the attack was directed at, one thing is fact. Bush is wrong on two counts.

The two leaders who led to the politicized term was the duo of Neville Chambairlan and Edouard Deladier who both agreed to let Hitler invade the Sudenteland which was in violation of the Treaty of Saint-Germain as long as he stopped there. Obama wants to have talks with Iran in order to persuade them to not invade Israel or go after nuclear weapons. He will not let Iran invade Israel.

Also, Obama is not negotiating with terrorist. Iran is a country and it should be treated as so. Some might say that Bush did not talk about Obama, Democrats or other people wishing to have talks with the nation of Iran because those people do not wish to talk to terrorist. Those who have that argument say that Obama and others taking offense might be showing something about their intention in the international scene. If that were the case, and Bush was not taking about Obama and others, then who was he talking about? This has nothing to do with the actual intentions of those who want to utilize diplomacy instead of practicing Bush’s version of diplomacy. It was an attack on those have a plan so terribly misunderstood or distorted by Bush and McCain.
